Women's Shelter, Brooklyn
One of the first shelters in the U.S. for women who were victims of domestic abuse opened in Brooklyn in the late 1970s. Oelbaum began photographing at the shelter soon after it opened and an image from this body of work was published in the prestigious 1979 anthology "The Family of Woman," edited by Julia Scully. Twenty photographs were recently acquired by The New York Historical (formerly known as The New York Historical Society) and a selection of photographs are currently on view at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC in the exhibition, "Designing Motherhood." More information and images are available upon request.
